In short

  • Decide the legal route first: most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold their ceremony in Ibiza.
  • Choose the season, then the venue: the best venues for June and September book 12–18 months ahead.
  • Book a local planner early; they hold the suppliers, timings and rules together.
  • Think in days, not hours: most Ibiza weddings run over a weekend.

Planning a wedding on an island you do not live on is mostly about doing things in the right order. This is the order that works.

18 to 12 months before

Decide how you will marry legally. Spain only marries couples where at least one partner lives in Spain or is Spanish, so most couples from abroad marry at their registry office at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Ibiza. A Catholic church wedding is the main exception. Our legal guide explains the options.

Pick a season and a rough size. June and September are the most popular months: warm, long evenings and the sea at its best. July and August are hottest and busiest, with the highest prices for flights and rooms. May and early October are calmer and cheaper, with a slightly higher chance of rain. See seasons and weather.

Find the venue. The venue decides most other things: how many guests, whether they can stay, how late the music can run and which suppliers you can bring. Browse venues and wedding villas.

Book a planner. A local planner knows which venues answer, which suppliers deliver and how the island's rules play out in practice. See wedding planners.

12 to 6 months before

  • Send save-the-dates. Guests from abroad need time to book flights and rooms, especially in high season.
  • Book the photographer, film-maker, musicians, florist and caterer. The best ones book up a year ahead for peak dates.
  • Block hotel rooms or villas for guests near the venue.
  • Plan the weekend: welcome drinks, the wedding day and the day after. Our timelines show how others do it.

6 to 2 months before

  • Plan guest transport for every movement. Taxis are scarce in summer: see transport.
  • Do the hair and make-up trial, the menu tasting and the final guest count.
  • If you are marrying in church, check that your papers have reached the Diocese of Ibiza.

The week of the wedding

Arrive at least three or four days before. You will want time for the final meetings with your planner and venue, the legal or church paperwork if any, and a day to rest before guests arrive.

Questions

How far ahead should we start planning?

Twelve to eighteen months for a June or September wedding at a popular venue. Smaller and off-season weddings can come together in six months or less.

Do we need to visit Ibiza before the wedding?

It helps a lot. Most couples come once to see venues and meet their planner, and many plan a second visit for tastings and trials.
