In short

  • Ball pagès is Ibiza's traditional folk dance; local groups can perform at weddings.
  • The all-white Ibiza wedding look comes from Adlib, the island's fashion movement since 1971.
  • Serve Vi de la Terra Eivissa wines and toast with hierbas ibicencas.
  • Flaó and greixonera make a very Ibiza dessert table.

Ibiza has a living culture that most wedding sites ignore. A few local touches make a wedding feel like it could only have happened here.

Ball pagès

Ball pagès is the island's centuries-old courtship dance, played on drum, flute and castanets: the man leaps around the woman, who moves in small circles with her eyes lowered. It was danced at weddings, after the harvest and at village fiestas. One variant, ses nou rodades, is a nuptial dance in which the newlyweds circle the floor arm in arm as a sign that guests may join in.

You can see it in summer in the church square at Sant Miquel on Thursday evenings, and local folk groups (colles) perform at private events. A short performance after the first dance surprises guests from abroad.

Dress: espardenyes, emprendada and Adlib

Traditional dress includes espardenyes, hand-made sandals of braided hemp, and the emprendada, gold, silver and coral jewellery that once formed a bride's dowry.

The flowing white look the world now calls "Ibiza style" comes from Adlib, from the Latin ad libitum, "as you please". It was launched at the first Ibiza fashion week in 1971, with the motto "dress as you like, but with style", and its revival is closely tied to bridal fashion and the white-dress-code weddings where every guest wears white. Many brides choose an island-made Adlib dress; espardenyes make lovely favours.

Food

  • Bullit de peix: fish stew followed by rice cooked in the broth
  • Sofrit pagès: the country stew of meat and potatoes
  • Flaó: a mint-scented cheesecake made with sheep's or goat's cheese
  • Greixonera: a bread-pudding dessert made from ensaïmada
  • Local rockfish, red prawns and lamb

Use them for a "taste of Ibiza" cocktail hour, late-night bites or a dessert table instead of, or as well as, the cake.

Wine and hierbas

The island's wines carry the protected name Vi de la Terra Eivissa. Producers include Can Rich, Ibizkus, Ojo de Ibiza and Can Maymó; Sant Mateu d'Albarca is the wine heartland. Formentera has its own Vi de la Terra.

Hierbas ibicencas is the anise-based herbal liqueur served after dinner across the island. It makes a perfect toast, and miniature bottles make good favours.
